If you have ever felt that crackle of excitement and privilege that goes with the premiere of a new work, then you will have known one of the greatest musical joys that exists for players and listeners alike. Such events offer us an intimate introduction to composers and their work, and so remind us of the full process of music making, which begins with that 'flesh and bones' effort of composition-a process that we all take too easily for granted. After all, we might nod in homage when they eye of Beethoven's plaster bust catches us unawares over the piano, but when are we to consider the wonder of wonders that finding new music really is? Well, here is your chance. There is something remarkable about this CD - it listens like a premiere. It might be that I am having a funny turn and like the idea of being 'transported', but I think that is more likely that the deep and long-lasting collaboration between pianist, Bernard Roberts, and composer, Stephen Dodgson, has given this recording that self-same atmosphere of intimate dedication.
Roberts is well known and respected as a Beethoven interpreter and that pianistic insight is key here. He understands sonatas, which work out the struggle between form and freedom, and makes Dodgson's most complicated textures simple to the ear. These contain a huge range which, to make them effective, demands every reserve of technique and imagination. Roberts accomplishes this with an improvisatory flair, communicating an abundant energy and pleasure in sound. I was particularly captivated by the burlesque of the Sonata 5; there is much for jazz lovers here as well. Many will know of Dodgson from his guitar music, although his piano music has a much smaller audience. Much praise must therefore go to Claudio for bringing these works to the public's attention. This is an excellent addition to the listener's repertoire.
