I believe that music is just as much a part of you as language, and that a habit of listening closely to music, combined with some hard work, will allow anyone to play an instrument. It is one of the most satisfying and life-affirming things you can do.
My teaching is aimed at beginners, so no prior knowledge is expected - only a love of music.
The main components of my teaching are:
Developing tone
Developing a sense of rhythm
Developing technique
Ear-training
Working on pieces of written music
Music theory
Students are encouraged to seek out music that appeals to them. I am knowledgeable in jazz, classical and rock, but I will work with students on whatever kind of music they are interested in. Through my passion for the art in all its forms I can bring students to a greater appreciation of the music that they already love, as well as music they might be unfamiliar with.
Because of the importance I place on listening, part of my method is studying recordings, so if you have favourite CDs that inspire you, or which you want to explore in some way, bring them along and I can incorporate them into a lesson plan.
Essentially, I aim to encourage students to enjoy practise. It is important to establish goals - and that is part of my teaching - but I also believe in relishing practise itself, and seeing it as a voyage of discovery.
