I’ve been playing for fifteen years and teaching for five. In this time I’ve performed in many different ensembles and worked in the studio.
I think it’s really important that my students don’t only develop their technique and repertoire, but also learn how music works so that they can compose, improvise, and transcribe for themselves; in short, be a real musician.
I customise guitar lessons to suit your interests. Often we will learn one of your favourite songs as a vehicle to learn about music in general. Or you could choose to study in depth how a chosen genre of music approaches melody and harmony.
Whatever your interests, you will soon master the fretboard by learning to recognise intervals between any given notes and developing your fluency with the CAGED system and boxshapes. We’ll also cover exciting techniques that are authentic to different genres of music, such as behind-the-nut bends and Travis picking in country, and alternate picking and harp harmonics in jazz.
My drum lessons are similarly tailored to students’ interests, covering along the way the fundamental rhythmic concepts of metre and syncopation; the advanced concepts of polyrhythm, tempo modulation, and displacement; and professional techniques such as the Moeller method and different kick-drum approaches. We will study Phrasing, Limb Patterns, and Orchestration, to develop all areas of your playing and generate lots of ideas.
I’m happy to teach any grade syllabus (if you want to study for a qualification) and I teach standard notation literacy. |
