Professional development with NYJC (National Youth Jazz Collective).
Instruments: All Saxophones.
Genre/Style(s): Jazz and Improvising (inc. blues, funk, soul, and pop). Classical.
Exam grades 1-8 with abrsm / trinity-guildhall (if required).
Some of my students are beginners and I also mentor professional performers.
I can also tailor Jazz Performance Workshop courses for groups (both school age and adults).

Gary believes in teaching the individual and that learning should be stimulating and fun. He is both a professional teacher and a professional saxophonist.

Gary is a former Head of Department at Southampton City College and has also taught at Exeter College and Kaitaia College (New Zealand). He has 30 years teaching experience, including teaching teachers on post graduate courses in education (PGCE) for Southampton University. He has devised and led Jazz workshops/courses for a number of organisations including the integrated Teignmouth Jazz Workshop / Jam Session / Jazz Festival program and the award winning 'Music Performance Education Group' (www.musicpeg.org.uk). Recently he has devised innovative teaching materials for DYJO (Devon Youth Jazz Orchestra).
His is the co-founder of the Southampton Musicans Collective and the Southern Improvisers Circuit.

As a saxophonist Gary currently features in a number of projects by the legendary composer Mike Westbrook (www.westbrookjazz.co.uk). He has appearied at the London Jazz Festival five times, Ronnie Scott's Jazz Club, and been broadcasted on BBC Radio Three. He appears on a number of CD recordings.
