Biography
Benjamin Andrew started learning to play the piano at the age of six in his home town of Leighton Buzzard with teacher Dennis Jeanes. He had lessons with Adrian Boynton before winning a place on the degree course at Trinity College of Music, London. There he studied under renowned British concert pianist and pupil of Heinrich Neuhaus, John Bingham. Benjamin has also recently completed a year of study at the Franz Liszt academy of Music,Budapest where he studied under Jenõ Jandó and Kornél Zempléni, once a pupil of the great Hungarian composer Ernö Dohnányi. Benjamin has also studied with teachers such as Martino Tirimo, Yonty Solomon and Philip Fowke.
Benjamin has participated in and won prizes in several competitions including the Buckingham and Oxford Music festivals. He was the winner of the Milton Keynes festival of the arts 2001 where he performed works by Rachmaninov and Liszt. Recently, During his time at Trinity, he was awarded the prestigious TCM trust Silver Medal for outstanding performance and contribution to the Keyboard Faculty.
Benjamin is an enthusiastic chamber musician and participates regularly in a variety of ensembles including violin and piano duo, and piano trio. He recently took part in a performance of Carnival of the Animals at Blackheath Halls. He is also passionate about both improvisation and composition and has had his works performed abroad as far as Germany and Turkey. Whilst at Trinity, Benjamin was involved in many improvisation based performances and workshops including a performance for two Pianos and Turntables. He has given numerous solo recitals both in the UK and abroad at venues such as St Martin in the Fields, the Pump room in Bath and Óbudai Társaskör, Budapest. Benjamin has given several concerto performances including a performance of Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue with the St Giles orchestra and Milton Keynes cornerstone orchestra 2006. His most recent concerto engagement was a performance of Rachmaninov’s 3rd piano concerto, a work revered by all pianists for its technical and physical demands. Future engagements include a return to the Pump room and various other solo recitals around the UK. Benjamin is also a full member of the ISM and is CRB checked
