Biography

At 23, saxophonist Huw Wiggin is quickly becoming recognised as a soloist and chamber musician in both the UK and abroad. He made his Purcell Room debut in January this year to great critical acclaim. The Times commented on his ‘Liquid gold tones and enviable breath control’ whilst Classical Source commented that he was ‘evidently at home across the extent of his repertoire’. He will be returning to the Purcell Room in October as a winner of a Martin's Musical/Philharmonia Orchestra Scholarship award.

Huw trained in Manchester at Chethams School of Music and further at the Royal Northern College of Music gaining a first class honours degree in 2008 together with a mark of 98% for his final recital; the highest mark ever awarded to a woodwind specialist.He then went on to study for a ‘Graduate Certificat’ at the Hochschule für Musik, Köln in Germany under the world famous saxophonist Daniel Gauthier with support from the Deutscher Akademischer Austausch Dienst (DAAD).
Notable successes include: In January 2010 Huw was selected by the Park Lane Group to appear in the PLG New Year Series 2010; In May 2008 Huw received a Star Award from the Countess of Munster Musical Trust; In 2008 Huw received a Music Education Award from the Musicians Benevolent Fund; Whilst studying at the RNCM he was twice a finalist in the Gold Medal Weekend in 2007 and 2008 respectively. He has performed solo recitals and played with orchestras in Manchester, Leeds, Uttrecht and at The Henley Festival of Music and the Arts. In Manchester Huw was leader of the Evoke Saxophone Quartet and performed regularly throughout the UK. Whilst studying in Germany Huw formed the Caramboulage saxophone quartet and performed throughout Germany. Huw has performed recitals with duo partner Tim Abel throughout the UK and in London at the Purcell Room and St James’ Church ,Piccadilly.

Huw now lives and works in London, combining teaching with solo and group recitals and still continues to study with Daniel Gauthier. Huw is very grateful for the support from The Countess of Munster Musical Trust, the Musicians Benevolent Fund, EMI Music Sound Foundation, The Loan Fund for Musical Instruments, the Henley Festival Trust and the Martin’s Musical Fund/Philharmonia Orchestra Scholarship Fund.
