Sean Webster - baritone

Sean was born in Edinburgh where he began his musical training as a chorister of St. Mary’s Cathedral. He went on to study with Andrew Doig at Napier University where he won the Harold Gray Award for Singing, then with Lynton Atkinson and Helen Yorke at Trinity Laban Conservatoire, London, where he was a TCM Trust scholar. Sean has been nominated to compete in the Isabelle Bond Gold Medal Competition, the college’s most prestigious award for solo performance.

As a concert soloist performing compositions ranging from Baroque to contemporary, Sean has appeared throughout the UK and abroad in such venues as the Royal Albert Hall and St. Martin-in-the-Fields, with ensembles including The BBC Symphony Chorus, The Scottish Chamber Choir and The Edinburgh Quartet. He regularly broadcasts on BBC Radio and was a mentee of The Sixteen in 2009. On stage he has performed various roles from Argante (Handel’s Rinaldo under Nicholas Kraemer) to the Major General (Gilbert and Sullivan’s Pirates of Penzance). Sean has participated in masterclasses with artists such as Ann Murray DBE, Simon Keenlyside, Robert Tear and Malcolm Martineau, and has received regular coaching from Eugene Asti. While at Trinity Laban, Sean was a finalist in all song competitions and won the English Song Competition in 2011. He is also a member of the vocal ensemble Blossom Street with whom has recorded on Union Square Music and Naxos labels.

Solo performance highlights include Mozart’s Great Mass in C Minor under Sian Edwards, Daniel-Lesur’s Le Cantique des Cantiques (BBC Proms 2010) and Handel’s Judas Maccabaeus (London Handel Festival 2010 under Laurence Cummings). Sean was also nominated to perform at Leeds Lieder+ 2011 where he gave a recital of English song and premiered a new work for baritone and piano by composer Stuart Murray Mitchell.
