Biography
I have always had an avid interest in music and drama, taking piano lessons, singing in a choir and performing in theatre at school from an early age. After matriculating I was accepted for a Bachelor of Arts degree part-time through the University of South Africa, specialising in both Music and English. Although my work at the time was IT based, I continued to take acting and music lessons, as well as performing in amateur events and teaching piano. In 2004, I made a decision to complete my BMUS degree with multidisciplinary specialisation in Musicology and Theatre and Performance Studies.
My final thesis won the South African Music Society competition and was published in 2006. Based on the film U-Carmen Ekhayelitsha, directed by Mark Dornford-May, my research explored issues of black class structure and the translation of Bizet’s Carmen into a South African township setting.
