TEACHING

Matthew Kam currently teaches at the RNCM Junior School (Manchester) as a deputy piano tutor and at Wrekin College (Shropshire) as a visiting piano tutor. He is also employed by the RNCM as a part-time accompanist for the vocal department on the Access to Work Scheme. He has a Bachelor of Music (Honours) degree from Melbourne University, Postgraduate Diploma in Performance (Distinction) from Victorian College of the Arts, and Postgraduate Diploma in Performance (Distinction) and Master of Music Performance (Distinction) degrees from RNCM. He was appointed Junior Fellow in Solo Piano (2007-2009) of RNCM.

He began teaching the piano in 2000 in Melbourne, Australia. For several years running since then, he has been regularly invited to assist in teaching masterclasses with the Team of Pianists to younger pianists as part of the Australian National Piano Award (Shepparton). He has also been a co-teacher in workshops culminating in the Bernstein Piano Competition held at Bernies Music Land (Melbourne). Matthew has also often joined forces with Professor Max Cooke in giving masterclasses at Universiti Malaya (Kuala Lumpur), Allegro Music School (Kuala Lumpur) and International Music House (Borneo). He was an adjudicator on the panel of judges for the HSBC International Classic Piano Festival 2008 (Kuala Lumpur Performing Arts Centre), a competition for advanced pianists of ages 26 and under. Recently, he has been invited to be one of the judges on the adjudication panel for the Australian National Piano Award 2012.

During his professional training as a Junior Fellow at the RNCM (2007-2009), Matthew gained considerable experience in coaching chamber music, accompanying and also mentoring undergraduate students enrolled on the piano pedagogy course. He continues to run a private teaching practice in England, preparing pupils of all ages for graded examinations from the level of Grade 1 right through to Diploma. In the past, he had students in Australia who successfully passed AMEB diploma exams and won important prizes in local eisteddfods and other competitions. Apart from teaching the ABRSM examination syllabus, he strongly encourages his pupils to learn to play music for pleasure and for personal development also.

Matthew is a member of the European Piano Teachers Association. Recently, an article that he wrote for the ‘Piano Professional’ magazine of EPTA was published in the January 2010 Spring Edition.
