I have many years experience in teaching rock and pop singing to adults, teenagers and children. I teach singers from beginners to advanced how to use their body to sing in a safe and healthy way. I help to improve breathing technique, posture, diction, tone, timing, phrasing, pitch range, pitching (to some degree), part singing, harmonies, rhythm and improvisation. I alternate the lessons so one week we work on a song using different voice qualities (twang, belting, onset, decay, etc) and the other week we work on technical aspects (intervals, harmonies and scales) using the Rock School syllabus. In both lessons I teach how to warm up in a safe way.
I believe everyone has a voice and I help to find it either in individual lessons or choirs. There is no such thing as ‘tone deaf’ and our current western society has squashed our instinctual need to sing in many people, sometimes being told at an early age that they can’t sing!
As well as teaching singing, I freelance in Devon as a Vocal Advisor for Sing Up (The Music Manifesto’s national singing program). I lead two adult and three separate children’s choirs once a week where I teach harmony and part singing. I am the singing teacher at Saturday Music School in Totnes. I regularly sing in a rock band (see www.lemonrock.com/usualsuspects) and as a duo (see www.lemonrock.com/primesuspects). I have worked for Dartington International Summer School as a Vocal Coach for the Rock Music Course. I am a qualified Primary Teacher and I have a Management degree from The Liverpool institute for Performing Arts.
Individual Singing lesson - £13.50 per half hour/ £9 per 20 min. The first lesson is an assessment lesson. This is to decide if the pupil is ready for rock and pop singing lessons or if they would be more suited to singing in a group or choir to gain more singing experience before learning the skills I teach. I do not teach extensive pitching and one can improve on this rapidly when singing regularly in groups or choirs. Also, to sing rock and pop songs the pupils learn how to make an emotional connection to the music and convey this to an audience which can be too advanced for younger children. This initial assessment lesson is also an opportunity for the pupil to decide if they would like to continue.
During your child’s piano lesson they will learn skills in listening, performing, reading music, playing by ear, aural techniques and preparation for jazz grades if required. I mainly teach jazz, blues, boogie woogie, ragtime and a bit of classical.
Learning to play the piano is more than a hobby - it is a commitment from both pupil and parent. Your child will need to practice at least five days a week, which will require a parent to sit next to him/her for the duration of the practice session if your child is 12 years or under. There are few children who will remember to practice or even want to regularly. If you think practising will be a recipe for arguments and tantrums or you or your child can not commit enough time for practice please think carefully about whether to start. Many parents try lessons and make a decision to try it again when their child is a bit older. Children are now juggling other interests and commitments in their life (homework, SATS, hobbies, etc).
Practice is required for ten to twenty minutes a day (5-6 days a week). For younger children it is a good idea to split the twenty minutes into two sessions (morning and evening). If this practise is achieved, steady progress will be maintained and they will enjoy learning to play the piano. They will progress far quicker if they practise a little each day rather than an hour before their lesson.
When your child practices please get them into the habit of repeatedly playing the parts of the music that they find hard and not playing through the piece from start to finish. If they play the easy parts well and stumble through the more difficult parts progress won’t be made. I can explain how to practice in more detail at your child’s lesson.
Please provide your child with a notebook so I can write practice notes for you and your child to read. I will also inform you of any music books that you need to buy. If you decide to go ahead with lessons, half a terms trial will start so that I can assess if your child is ready to learn the piano and also your child can decide if they would like to continue.
