I was educated at King's School, Canterbury where I was a music scholar. I gained a choral exhibition to Corpus Christi College, Cambridge in 1981. From 1987 I studied singing with Nigel Wickens (then vocal teacher at Anglia Polytechnic/Ruskin Univesity) and performed as a tenor soloist in Cambridgeshire and Essex.
In 1990 I went to study conducting with George Hurst in Canford Summer School, and shortly afterwards took up a number of conducting positions in Cambridge, including the Cambridge Youth Orchestra, Apollo Opera, Orlando Singers. Then in 1995 I went to St. Petersburg Conservatoire to study conducting with Ilya Musin. On return to England in 1997 I commenced singing teaching in Cambridge, where I have established a number of different voice-training techniques to suit different pupils.
In 2010 I started studying with ENO tenor John Upperton.
