Biography

Guy Hayward is a young baritone who started singing as a boy chorister at Bath Abbey when he was seven. He later became a Choral Scholar at Trinity College, Cambridge under Richard Marlow and Stephen Layton and has also sung with choirs such as the Florilegium Choir and Laudibus (National Youth Chamber Choir).

On hearing Alfred Brendel and Matthias Goerne’s recording of Schubert’s ‘Winterreise’ as a schoolboy Guy discovered Lieder and was immediately hooked. Six years later, in Trinity College Chapel accompanied by Rupert Compston, he gave his first performance of ‘Winterreise’. He recently accepted a place on the prestigious Oxford Lieder Master Course, run by Ian Partridge, and had coaching from Roger Vignoles, Michael Dussek, and Andrew West. In addition to the songs of German composers, Guy has developed a love of the English song tradition and last year performed Arthur Somervell’s settings of Tennyson’s ‘Maud’ as part of a concert series, organised by Trinity College, marking the 200th anniversary of Tennyson’s birth. He was also a finalist in the Association of English Speakers and Singers ‘2010 Courtney Kenny Award’.

Whilst chamber music is his preferred performing context, Guy also enjoys opera, and recently performed at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival a new translation of Ravel’s ‘L’enfant et les sortileges’ (The Child and the Spells) playing a ‘text message’ and a ‘cat’. During his time at Cambridge he has also been involved in student productions, notably Weill’s ‘Seven Deadly Sins’, Mozart’s ‘Don Giovanni’ (the Don’s understudy) and Debussy’s ‘Pelleas et Melisande’ (The Shepherd). In somewhat sunnier pastures, in summer 2009 Guy participated in an opera workshop, ‘From Score to Stage’ at La Maison Verte near Montpellier, run by Ashley Stafford and Marco Ozbic (Vienna State Opera, San Carlo Opera) in which he performed scenes as Papageno (Magic Flute), Figaro and Doctor Bartolo (Barber of Seville).

In the future, Guy will be singing in British Youth Opera's chorus workshop in August 2011, in which he will be directed by some of the leading opera directors in the world. In September 2011, he will be performing the role of 'Corpo' in a production of Cavalieri's 'Rappresentatione di Anima et di Corpo' in Venice, under the direction of Philip Thorby (Trinity College of Music).

Guy (aka Frank Sinatra) also sings in a jazz ensemble with his vocal partner, Dean Martin (aka Adam Drew); pianist Liam Dunachie; bassist Misha Mullov-Abbado; and drummer David Burgoyne. Recent gigs include a charity jazz event with Churchill Jazz Band, Trinity College, Cambridge and St. John's College, Cambridge May Balls (recently voted as being among the top 10 best parties in the world), and various other private engagements.

One particularly memorable solo performance was a performance of Jeff Buckley's 'Hallelujah' at a wedding in Tobago.

Guy is currently completing a PhD with Ian Cross on the Evolutionary Psychology of Music at Trinity College, Cambridge. He studies singing with Ashley Stafford.
