I have 20 years experience of teaching adults & children and have been singing and playing the guitar, bass, piano and percussion for between 20 - 35 years.

I listen, encourage, teach basic technique and offer creative ideas to inspire you to explore, learn, play, create and enjoy the journey towards your musical goals.

My lessons are ‘student-centred’ i.e. they are focussed on what you want and need to learn. Many teachers just talk and demonstrate. I listen, demonstrate and interact with you at all times so it is a two way learning process.

Ring me for a chat or email with any questions you may have about learning music. Or see website for more details. www.lifemusic.org.uk

I call myself the Music Doctor because I offer simple cures to the most common musical ailments e.g.

• understanding and feeling the correct beat and rhythm – get your voice and hands in the right place at the right time ! Feel the beat in your body and your feet.
• ear training - listening more deeply and hearing what is going on in the music; recognising and understanding chord types and musical moods
• the simplest of finger movements on guitar or piano which can help you to play better
• how to improve at improvising and composing melodies
• structuring your ideas
• forgetting about structure and theory and allowing your own quirky creations to emerge from the hidden depths of your creativity
• s l o w i n g d o w n w h i l e p r a c t i s i n g
• tons of encouragement to believe in yourself and your unique creativity – you can do whatever you want musically or vocally … and it will help if you are committed and dedicated, and you practise, or at least, play, as often as possible
• … this list is almost endless …

I am happy to combine instruments e.g. singing and piano, guitar and piano. For example, we might alternate from week to week, or spend half an hour on each every week.

Singing / Voicework
--------------------------
Singing is an energising feel-good activity offering many benefits, yet also requiring work on mind, body & spirit. Anyone can learn to sing, and the more committed you are, the faster you’ll progress !

My teaching draws upon 25 years of vocal experience and training. I specialise in coaching beginners and uncertain singers for fun, pleasure and creativity. My main tool is tons of support and encouragement, and a relaxed, non-judgemental attitude.

I teach the fundamentals, which apply to any musical genre: breathing, body and energy awareness, listening, technique, improvisation and exercises to develop range, flexibility, power, articulation and tone. I accompany on piano or guitar, I can suggest songs, or bring your own.

More experienced singers can benefit from training in general musicianship, ear training, improvisation, rhythm and theory. Also, attitude, confidence and developing a sense of your energy and presence are vital to developing vocal power and freedom of expression.

Guitar: acoustic / electric / bass
-----------------------------------------
Learn to play your favourite music from songbooks, sheet music or recordings. Develop musical awareness and confidence with lead guitar, strumming and finger-picking. Learn essential theory and how to use it. Be encouraged and inspired !

Beginners: learn the correct basic techniques and fundamental knowledge of the instrument. You can start to be creative and compose your own songs & music right from the very first lesson !

Improvers: polish your unique skills and style, correct bad habits, expand your repertoire and fill in gaps in your knowledge which are holding you back. Learn and progress as fast as you want.

Experienced players: get positive encouragement, feedback, inspiration and a new perspective. I listen to where you’re at and offer insights and support.

Keyboard / Piano
-----------------------
Have fun with this accessible and popular instrument. Develop new skills, learn the basic elements of music: notes, scales, chords, melody, rhythm, theory, reading song sheets and notation, finger exercises.

I aim to get you playing immediately, without getting bogged down in theory. I always encourage creativity and self-expression , so if you want, we can just explore, play and create !

I can support more experienced players by filling gaps in your knowledge of harmony, rhythm & composition, and by encouraging your creative process as an accompanist, composer or performer. I can teach you to read chord symbols to accompany popular songs, and give you feedback and inspiration. I do not teach classical music or exam grades.

Singing & playing together
-----------------------------------
A rhythm, concentration and co-ordination challenge ! Anyone can do it with the 3 P’s: patience, perseverance, and practice. Head for the stage or learn just for fun !

Intuitive creativity & musicianship
--------------------------------------------
In all of my teaching, I encourage students to develop a balance between technique, knowledge, intuition and free expression of feelings & musical impulses. Discover your own unique musical magic!

Rhythm & percussion
-----------------------------
Easy and fun ! Rhythm is the foundation of most music. Learning and practising the basics will support all of your other musical endeavours, help you to develop into a good all-round musician, and build your skills for jamming & playing with others.

General Musicianship
-----------------------------
The building blocks of music: theory and what to do with it, ear training, improvisation. Develop awareness & listening skills. Learn from song books, recordings, or notation.

Songwriting & recording
--------------------------------
Learn to compose, arrange and record your own songs & music. Write bass lines, melodies, drum tracks, backing vocal harmonies & lyrics. I can teach you Logic & Garageband on Mac.
