Notes:

I have been teaching for over twenty years, both privately and in many schools. I continue to be passionate about music teaching and love to nurture pupils of any age and ability level, sharing my gifts with them and watching them blossom and develop their own.

The very first instrument I learned was the descant recorder and this was such a good foundation for me, teaching me the rudiments of music - pitches, rhythm and even terms and signs used when reading music. A child as young as five or six can play this and I am experienced in relating to very young children, having brought up two of my own and being able to 'pitch' the lessons to suit them and keep their interest, with musical games and sometimes singing included.

Although I progressed on to the flute, (some recorder and flute fingerings are very similar, which helps) some of my recorder pupils have gone on to learn piano, clarinet, even trumpet or drums etc. If a child really wants to learn the flute but is too young, not yet having his/her socond teeth, a small plastic flute called a fife can be bought very cheaply. Recorders can, of course, be [played in ensembles along with the larger treble, tenor and bass recorders and tiny sopranino recorder. I myself take part in one of these, showing that the recorder is a lovely instrument in its own right and examinations can be taken on it and it can be studied to a high level. So...it is indeed a versatile instrument and one well worth considering if your child shows even a little interest in music.

My flute teaching caters for children or adults who 'just want to play for fun' and those who like the targets/goals of the music examination system. Flutes can play a wide range of music, from classical to popular, through to folk and jazz and there is such a lot of wonderful music out there! Again I always encourage my pupils to join ensembles such as bands or orchestras, maybe school based ones, as these provide them with valuable sight reading experience as well as a lot of fun. They help in their social devlopment too. I myself have had experience in directing such groups. I have had numerous examination successes, one of the latest being a Grade 7 Flute with Distinction. All these musical activities help to increase confidence and self-esteem.

Being a pianist too. I am able to accompany my pupils when they take their exams and often play piano along with them during lessons (as well as playing my flute in duets with them)

I have had experience in teaching pupils with special needs and I feel I have great patience.
