Hi, my name is Simon Toner and I am a London based music teacher specialising in bass guitar and double bass, jazz and composition. I also teach beginners piano, keyboard/synth and guitar. I am flexible to arrange lessons around the times which suit the student whether weekly or fortnightly reflecting the realistic amount of time available in their week to practice. I can arrange lessons during the day or in the evenings to suit any kind of student. I am happy to teach students as a group on request. I have experience of teaching in secondary school classes and teaching group lessons.

I have applied over 10 years experience and a Popular Music degree in bass and composition to my teaching practice where I first and foremostly enable my students to grow a greater enthusiasm and love for music and sound.

I am happy to take on any level of bassist, double bassist, jazz musician or composer. For piano, guitar, ukulele, keyboard or synth I would be more comfortable taking on beginners. I am interested in teaching both adults and children. I have recently been investigating how I would go about teaching bass to deaf people as it is the instrument which gives off the most tangible physical vibrations and lends itself to the deaf perception of music. I can help you prepare for music exams, including Highers (I achieved Advanced Higher A), Rock School Bass Guitar Grades, ABRSM Double Bass Grades or Music Theory exams. I can teach many different styles such as Rock, Blues, Pop, Metal, Funk, Folk, Jazz whatever you want!

I tailor lessons to the student and am happy teaching using sheet music and by ear. I think every musician should learn to do both so I encourage ear training/active listening, sight reading and transcription in lessons and as homework. I tailor lessons to the student with my own transcriptions, teaching material and pre-existing bass books. I am happy to work through specific material if provided by the student.

In my teaching discipline there is a balance between enabling the student to commit to their practice by laying out clear goals and expectations, and presenting enjoyable lessons with a laid-back attitude that give full consideration to enabling the studentís enthusiasm for music and sound to grow.

I enjoy working with students who are enthusiastic, whether with the simple goal of enjoying their music or greater aspirations for a career in music (not that the two are mutually exclusive!). I like teaching because it is challenging and requires the teacher to adapt to the student and to kindle their enthusiasm.

I got into music because it amazed me how each unique instrument could combine together to make one sound greater than the sum of its parts. My music heroes are Miles Davis, Charles Mingus and those other jazz (and bass) giants but also film composers like Bernard Herrmann and Michael Kamen, conductors like Daniel Barenboim and unique artists like Bjork.

I developed to become the musician I am today by expanding my musicality through teachers, some more typical than others. Every time I play music I learn and I am a student of the musicians around me, the composer of the composition or the band leader, and in turn, through my playing, composition and band leading, I reciprocate and teach in return.

I play double bass and bass guitar regularly with jazz bands, DIY projects and as part of Luke Closelyís Magic/Music show where I was a part of a great run at the Fringe along with theatre and stage show gigs. Away from jazz I play with a variety of original music projects. There is a great video of a record date I did with Lunir and the Maxwell String Quartet which can be viewed here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xf_TMHLiBqE.

Lessons can be held at my flat or at your home, I am also open to hiring a space to teach in if this would be a better go between option for you.
