I really enjoy the challenge of teaching and working out the learning styles of different students. I always start by finding out what kind of music the student is passionate about and aiming to play it if possible. Usually it will involve choosing the simpler songs of an artist or genre to begin with and then adding more complex material as we go along.

Some students just want to be able to play some of their favourite songs but others will want to develop themselves more fully as musicians, and I can help in either case. I have a very practical and robust understanding of music theory that has been built up playing in covers bands since I was a teenager, and I like to convey the different principles of music theory to my students through the use of relevant examples and exercises.

Lessons can be as informal or formal as the student would like, from just strumming chords and learning a few songs to fully investigating the neck of the guitar, advanced techniques of fingering and picking, building and improvising solos through the knowledge of different note collections (scales) and reading music in tab and dot form. I can of course prepare students for grades if desired (although I have never done them myself!). I believe that my extensive experience of professional live performance all over Europe gives me an excellent practical grasp of the instrument and my friendly and patient manner make me an ideal character to pass this knowledge on to any student!

“James has been teaching my now 11 year old son for 3 years. He has an excellent disposition with children; patient, creative, encouraging and reliable. I appreciate how precious our children are, and have no concerns with James. In addition to being a great teacher, he is a well respected member in our community” – Christen Sweeney

“Patient and knowledgable. Made me feel at ease and not at all out of my depth. A couple of lessons and you’ll see the difference, believe me” – Geoff Rileys

“Think of any song you wanna learn and James will know it without a doubt! Very patient and detailed tutor who I’d happily recommend” – Andy Thomas

“James is a fabulous tutor. My 7 year old son really enjoys his lessons & he is officially hooked. He had no experience when he started with James but he grows in confidence every week. Highly recommend” – Jessica Duff

“James has been teaching my daughter to play the guitar for 3 months now and she’s never enjoyed a music lesson more (usually gives up after 5 minutes). Contemporary music selection, a down to earth teaching style and a raw passion for playing – a winning combination” – Nina Webb
