Piano, keyboards Any style the client would like of course. E.g. Rock, blues, jazz, funk as well as classical......, , Emphasis on enjoyment rather than formality. I like to encourage creativity, improvisation, playing by ear; use of recording as an aid to improvement as well as classical notation and grades. However it is up to the client of course to choose exactly what they want from the lessons. Usually classically trained pianists want to explore other styles, play by ear and improvise, and those that can play but can't read music would like to be able to do that and understand some theory. I think that ideally all musicians should be able to work either way., , Many beginners get frustrated by having to play very simplistic pieces that they really don't enjoy. I don't agree with this style of teaching, I prefer to find something that the pupil enjoys and work with that. Breaking it down to make it possible to play and then adding more detail as the playing develops., , Playing is a physical activity so good posture and relaxation is an important prerequisite to good playing! An important, but often missed, component of good teaching!, , I can teach from home, but often find that it is better for the pupil to learn on their own instrument. Obviously if there is a lot of travelling involved I might charge a little extra for that. , , For most pupils I find that 1 hour is ideal, but other durations and group lessons are available by negotiation. , , I always offer free email support in between lessons. In particular I find that getting the pupil to email me a summary of the lesson immediately afterward is a great aid to learning, and allows me to remind them of anything they may have forgotten!!., , Although not a singer I do offer some coaching/music theory to singers to help them improve things like timing, phrasing, intonation etc or to read sheet music.. Many singers tell me that they benefit from some basic musical theory to understand keys, rhythms etc even if not to the level of actually reading music notation. I agree, I think that sort of understanding helps with interpretation and communicating with other musicians esp in an ensemble/band situation.
