Piano, Keyboard and Accordion PIANO and KEYBOARD, , I believe a strong foundation of classical music is important to achieve a good technique for playing the piano and am myself classically trained. However, I also believe that variety is important and normally teach rock, pop, blues, boogie woogie and jazz. Also, if a pupil brings a piece they want to learn to play they will be free to do so., , I will put pupils through ABRSM grades up to grade 8 if the pupil desires to. I believe examinations can be a good incentive to practise but I do not believe in pushing pupils constantly onto the next grade unless it is their wish as the pressure can make learning less enjoyable., , ACCORDION, , I mainly teach traditional music, including Scottish and Irish jigs, reels, strathspeys and waltzes; French and Italian Musettes and polkas; Spanish Flamenco music; Argentine Tango; Gypsy music and even some Balkan music to name but a fraction of what traditional music has to offer! For more advanced students, I teach viirtuoso accordion music (like that of the famous accordionist Pietro Frosini) and light classical (like Vittorio Monti's 'Czardas'). I have often felt that some areas of music have been neglected by accordionists. To make up for this I have arranged and play some classical repetoire (accordion can be adapted to organ music fantastically!) and jazz and will teach this if the pupil desires., , BOTH, , I will teach sight reading and improvisation. I have found that when these skills are learnt that the ability to look at a sheet of music and be able to play it right then or to make up your own music on the spot are the among the greatest joys to be had from playing a musical instrument.
