Hi there! , , I am a passionate lover of singing, working as both a teacher and an opera singer since 2016. , , But do I just teach opera? No, in fact, mostly, I do not at all. I teach the music the pupil wants, and teach a set of core principles (largely from ongoing scientific and musical research) which helps healthy singing, and which is applicable to any genre of music. , , Different aesthetics in singing means that singing is not always about 'just a beautiful sound'. Whilst opera/soul/jazz often encourage a focus on beauty, rock/pop/metal vocals are looking at something more gritty. I work around such distinctions and simply help the pupil understand the core principles so that they can produce a healthy voice at all times. , , I started teaching privately 4 years ago at Holy Cross Sixth Form College, Bury (Lancs), when I was doing my MMus in Voice at the Royal Northern College of Music (Manchester). Since 2016, I have been a singing teacher at the American Community School (ACS), Egham, where I have largely taught young voices with no prior experience of singing. I have taken them through those early stages of 'finding a voice' and building their confidence, almost entirely from their own interest in singing, but gently encouraging them to try new music. Crucially, I am about self-empowerment, and put the power in the pupil's hands. I am a guide and not a dictator. They can sing anything they want but I will just listen, and then help them sing it healthily., , My pupils make up singers in some local Surrey/London choirs, budding young teenage voices in school concerts and competition winners, who have also performed with groups, such as, Yvonne Arnaud Youth Music Theatre (Guildford). , , I often encourage pupils to enter for singing exams (with a preference of Trinity over ABRSM), and I conduct mock exams for such pupils. But, this is not a requirement for progress. I form weekly targets with the pupils, I encourage them to listen back to lessons, and to listen to other singers to learn from masters. I do not actually have any expectations of the pupil. They can come with no interest at all in music. I can work with this. I am experienced in it as aforementioned., , I teach any age, anywhere with an internet connection, and encourage them to train towards opportunities post-lockdown. During this mess, at the back of my mind is nurturing the next generation of famous West End stars, divas of the Royal Opera House, and mega popstars like Ed Sheeran for the charts. We can do this now. We have the power., , I also have worked a lot as a singing workshop leader in primary schools, currently working for Primary Robins School Project (Grange Park/Pimlico Opera). My work here can be seen for free on my homepage: https://john.hollandavery.com., , See my rates to the right (flexible to negotiate). Your first trial lesson is half price. I have a valid DBS, and record Zoom lessons for the safeguarding of both parties, which are then made available to you via a Google Drive email link., , So, contact me, and make sure your laptop is ready for a Zoom meeting! I'm an absolute whizz with Zoom and you'll find our lessons immense fun where we share backing tracks, listen to singers, and most importantly make those sounds OURSELVES! Energy, energy! Off we go! :) Musical Theatre, Pop, Classical, Opera, Folk. , , If a pupil has interests in metal grow/rock belt, then we can work on it together to see if I can help.
