Hello! I'm Eilidh. Thank you for looking at my profile.

**I am currently only teaching online and am happy to teach students living anywhere in the UK or abroad**

I am passionate about teaching and I care deeply about my studentsí progress as flautists and as people. There is potential to be found and nurtured in every student.

I am a highly experienced performer and teacher, having held various professional orchestral positions and teaching jobs, and having worked all over the UK and abroad.

I teach flute at the Centre for Advanced Training at Sage Gateshead (equivalent to junior conservatoire level), and at Newcastle University where I am also Head of Woodwind. I would like to build up my private teaching too.

The majority of my students gain 'distinctions' in their ABRSM exams and I have had students gain places in the National Children's Orchestras, the National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain (the current principal flute in NYO is a student of mine who I have taught for the past 5 years) and who have gone on to gain places at UK music colleges. I am very proud of all my studentsí achievements and gain great satisfaction in seeing them progress from week to week and year to year.

I am fortunate to have studied with top-class flautists Paul Edmund-Davies, Jaime Martin and Simon Channing at the Royal College of Music, as well as Celia Chambers for orchestral classes, Stewart McIlwham for piccolo and Rachel Brown on Baroque flute. I gained many insights from each of them that I have tried to carry through into my own teaching.

I have methods for teaching the various aspects of flute technique, however, I find it important to remain flexible and not have a one-size-fits-all approach. Different students require different approaches to learning and I try to tailor my lessons accordingly. Most importantly, I encourage my studentsí enjoyment of playing and performing, their love of music as a whole and a positive approach to practice time; I try to help them develop into well-rounded musicians whilst giving them the flute technique they require to facilitate this.

My professional background :

I work as guest principal flute with many orchestras around the UK, most recently the Scottish Chamber Orchestra, Royal Northern Sinfonia, Opera North, Royal Scottish National Orchestra, BBC Philharmonic Orchestra and the Royal Ballet Sinfonia. I have also worked with the Chamber Orchestra of Europe, London Symphony, London Philharmonic, Philharmonia, Royal Liverpool Philharmonic, BBC Symphony and BBC Concert Orchestras.

From 2013 - 2019 I held the position of Principal Flute in Royal Northern Sinfonia at Sage Gateshead.
I have also held the positions of Sub-Principal Flute with the BBC National Orchestra of Wales and Principal Flute in the Hong Kong Sinfonietta, having been offered the job there immediately after graduating from the RCM in 2004. It was an incredible, eye-opening experience to live and work in a city so different from the UK, and to form long-lasting friendships with musicians from Hong Kong and all over the world.
