Biography

Shruti Sriram had her early training in Karnatic vocal from her grandmother Smt. Kalpakam Balasubrahmanian and in Bharatanatyam from her mother, Guru Smt.Pushkala Gopal. She pursued further vocal training from Sangeeta Kalanidhi Srimathi D.K. Pattammal in Chennai and completed her Arangetram in Bharatanatyam in 1993 in Chennai under the tutelage of Kala Acharyas Padmasri Shanta and Sri VP Dhananjayan (Founders- Bharatakalanjali). Leading up to her Arangetram, Shruti received intensive training in technique and abhinaya from Shri Unnikrishnan and Shrimati Srilata Vinod, who were both senior staff members at Bharatakalanjali in the 1980's and 90's. While in Chennai, Shruti won prizes at different inter school/collegiate cultural events and sabha competitions. She featured in the December festival season at Sri Krishna Gana Sabha,Karthik Fine Arts, and Bharat Kalachar. Shruti also featured in the National Indian TV channel Doordarshan's program- ADAL ARANGAM, a series dedicated to Indian dance. Between 1990- 1994, She performed with the Dhananjayans in their acclaimed theatre productions SRI RAMANATAKAM, SRI THYAGARAJA VAIBHAVAM and Bharatakalanjali's TASHER DESH, which was a tribute to the Gurus from the students of Bharatakalanjali. She participated in the Mahabalipuram festival in 1994. She has worked with Mudralaya (UK), and was the lead female dancer in their production "secret of Life". Shruti has to her credit several students of mudralaya, who she taught and trained towards their arangetram since1995. She has provided vocal support for several arangetrams since 1995 in the UK and Europe. Shruti started SANSKRITI: in 1999 with 2 students in Minneapolis (Minnesota,USA). Her diligence and commitment to pupils quickly popularised SANSKRITI: and by 2003. Shuti was successfully running SANSKRITI: training over 60 pupils in both dance and music. Shruti currently teaches Bharatanatyam and Vocal music in East London. Her students are regular performers at public events and have won several music/dance competitions each year conducted by the Croydon Music Festival and Sivan Isai fine Arts (India). Shruti continues to perform internationally as a dancer and vocalist for Arangetrams.
