Emma Smith began learning the violin at the age of three, using the Suzuki Method. She went on to study at the Centre for Young Musicians, where she led the London Schools Symphony Orchestra, and then at Trinity College of Music, where she led all the College orchestras and won numerous prizes for both her performance skills and musicianship, notably the Silver Medal in her final year. She graduated with First Class Honours.

Emma currently performs and records with a host of innovative ensembles, including the Elysian Quartet - an experimental string quartet who specialise in contemporary classical and improvised music - and the Mercury Prize-nominated jazz group Basquiat Strings.
