I am a friendly, patient teacher with over 30 years’ experience in helping children and adults to coax beautiful sounds from violins and violas. I teach in 2 state schools where I am privileged to be able to introduce youngsters to the fun of string playing, and to help teenagers to further their skills. I am also the viola teacher at Nottingham University where I help students to prepare for degree recitals and diplomas.

Learning an instrument is an organic musical experience so, alongside string technique, lessons will develop creativity, listening skills and musicianship. Having a solid foundation of good technique minimises the strains that are put on the body. For beginners this happens naturally right from the first lesson but I am also happy to help more advanced players free themselves from technical habits that might be proving unhelpful or even painful.
Throughout, I try to teach in a way that equips each learner, whatever their age or ability, with the knowledge and strategies they need in order to start on the journey towards becoming their own teacher.

I am happy to help learners prepare for exams (ABRSM / Trinity / GCSE or A Level performance).

As well as regular tuition I also provide ‘one-off’ or ‘as and when’ assistance to older students who wish to focus either on a specific aspect of their technique or on a particular piece of repertoire (eg an orchestral or chamber music part) or even just want the opportunity to give their playing the equivalent of an MOT and service.

In addition to teaching, a large part of my working week is usually spent as a professional viola player, and as such I am lucky to perform with amazing colleagues in orchestras and ensembles including CBSO, Sinfonia Viva and The Stringcredibles.

I am currently teaching online (Zoom/Skype) so if you or your child would like to explore the wonderful world of string playing for the first time, or would like to build on skills you already have, please get in touch.
