Biography

Birmingham based Soprano, Philippa Althaus, began her vocal training at the University of Birmingham whilst studying as an undergraduate.In 2014 she gained a Distinction in her Master of Music, specialising in vocal performance, where she was supported by a full Bramall Scholarship. Prior to this, Philippa was awarded a Distinction for her Licentiate of The Royal Schools of Music in vocal performance.

During her time at Birmingham University Philippa had many opportunities to perform as a soloist, highlights include Carmina Burana , The Valley of Hatsu-Se by Lutyens, Dallapiccola’s Tre Poemi and Susanna in Le nozze di Figaro in the Summer Festival Opera. Since graduating, operatic ventures have included the roles of Amore and Valetto in performances of L'incoronazione di Poppea at The Woodhouse Opera Festival.

In 2015 Philippa was awarded a place on the Armonico Consort Scholarship Scheme where recent solo opportunities have included Mozart's Requiem, Charpentier's Te Deum and Kuhnau's Magnificat. Last November Philippa performed in the Premiere of Stuart Stevens’ All About And To A Female Artist as the soprano soloist with Thumb Ensemble and Salford Theatre Company.

Philippa is currently studying at the Associated Studios Opera Course in London with Valerie Reid and Sally Burgess and has taken part in master classes with Graeme Danby, Yvonne Howard and Andrew Watts. Opera Scenes have included Susanna in Le nozze di Figaro, fünfte mägdlein in Elektra and Mere Marie in Dialogues des Carmélites. In March Philippa performed the UK Premiere of Black Anemones by Josef Schwanter with pianist Rebecca Barham in London as part of her course at the Associated Studios.
