Michelle Lee

Violinist


Michelle Lee achieved her Master’s degree in Advanced Performance at the Royal College of Music in 2011, under the tutelage of Madeleine Mitchell. She devotes her time in teaching and performing with Kindred Duo and has given public concerts including Beethoven’s ‘Kreutzer’ Sonata in the recital series at St Mary Abbot’s Church, Kensington and at St John’s, Notting Hill. In 2012 &2013, they performed numerous concerts in Spain. In 2009, she participated in the Britten-Pears Young Artist Programme and trained as an orchestral player under Antonio Manacorda and Vassily Petrenko. She is in close collaboration with the New London Opera Group, promoting Gilbert & Sullivan’s music and with CLIC Sargent Symphony Orchestra, helping children with cancer. As an advocate of contemporary music, Michelle has showcased Spanish composer Marcos Fernandez’ Toccata for Piano Trio and Australian composer Huw Belling’s The Meeting from his chamber opera ‘Carousel of Blood’. In May 2011, she performed Steve Reich’s Violin Phase for 4 Violins at Café Oto in Dalston.

Currently, she is a member of the Commonwealth Orchestra and London Chamber Players.

A Canadian native who was raised in Hong Kong, Michelle began her musical studies at the age of 4 on the piano and took up the violin at 12. At 15 years old, she already achieved ABRSM grade 8 exams in piano, violin and theory and a ‘first class honours distinction’ of Royal Conservatory of Music grade 10 diploma. In addition, she can play the clarinet, cello, trumpet, and oboe.

Michelle’s mentors on the violin also include Annalee Patipatankoon, Scott St. John, Lilly Camden, and Bronson Kwan. In Canada, Michelle gave performances with the Toronto Symphony Youth Orchestra at Toronto Centre for the Arts, as well as Roy Thomson Hall. She was invited to tour with L’Orchestre de la Francophonie Canadienne under the baton of Jean-Philippe Tremblay. In the course of her Bachelor’s degree, she led the University of Toronto Symphony Orchestra as the Concert Master. During the summers, she enjoys attending festivals such as the Orford Academy, Toronto Summer Music Festival and Domaine Forget.
