Here is some information about the guitar lessons Iím currently offering. The guitar lessons are aimed towards intermediate to advanced level players who are looking to develop their existing skills on jazz guitar or are coming from a different musical background and want to get into the world of jazz guitar or are preparing to enter a music college etc.

Below, I am setting out the main areas of focus along with some of the material I use to approach them and to structure the lessons around.


· Knowledge of the Instrument
Material: Understanding of the fretboard, scales & arpeggios in positions as well as horizontally, chord voicings & inversions, intervals, voice leading. Limitation exercises, scale & arpeggio connection exercises

· Harmony
Material: Scales, modes, chord types, discovering new voicings, functional as well as modal harmony, chord/scale relationships, substitutions, reharmonization. Harmonic analysis of solo transcriptions. Developing chord-melody style playing.

· Rhythm
Material: rhythmic vocabulary enhancement, syncopation, rhythmic patterns, rhythmic displacement, odd time signatures, odd note groupings. Exercises to help you develop a strong sense of time and rhythmic accuracy.

· Improvisation
Material: Playing over chord changes, motivic development, jazz phrasing, hearing melodies, singing lines, ideas for solo construction.

· Technique
Material: Left hand efficient fingerings, Right hand picking technique. Left & right hand co-ordination, developing good sound, legato. Exercises to help build up your endurance, speed, accuracy.

· Repertoire
Material: Learn standard as well as contemporary jazz tunes. Learn music that illustrates concepts currently working on. Analyze various compositional styles, develop and structure your own compositions.

· Ear training
Material: Hearing chord types, inversions. Recognize scales, modes, and intervals.

· Sight Reading
Material: Etudes, classical pieces, bebop solos, position reading.
