ALCM Piano
Grade 5 Jazz Piano
Instruments: Piano
Genre/Style(s): Classical
Ability Levels: Beginners to Advanced

Since moving to Norwich in 1989, I have been working as a self-employed musician: teaching classical and jazz piano privately, and running jazz improvisation classes and summer schools for adult education. In the last few years ‘Red Shadow Quartet’, a jazz quartet founded by myself and bassist Dave Pullin, has been developing its own distinctive sound.

Over the years I have taught a wide range of pupils, aged from 6 to 70–something. Some have chosen to take grade exams (I have a 100% pass rate) others have played just for pleasure.

I grew up with classical music and still love playing and teaching it. Jazz was a second love, and my jazz teaching includes the ABRSM jazz syllabus, as well as developing improvisation skills, learning chord voicings and working from lead sheets.

I also love writing music, and have composed music for piano, solo singers, choirs, and jazz ensembles. I’ve produced two CDs of my own music, and my jazz compositions are featured on CDs by the Red Shadow Quartet.

I teach at home in Horstead NR12 (halfway between Norwich and North Walsham), using a Bechstein piano, or if you prefer I also have a Yamaha digital piano.
