Notes:

Many years experience as peripatetic music and guitar tutor.
Performance experience: early music ensembles; rock bands; solo.

Teaching is primarily focused on the style that the pupil wishes to learn to play, although in the case of a complete beginner the idea of developing an individual style is not so relevant, as the first 12 to 24 months is usually spent learning and developing the basic musical and physical skills necessary to play the instrument.

Practice is essential, particularly if you wish to enter a (practical) grade exam. Advice (which I always give) regarding practice is essential in order that a pupil clearly understands how to make the best use of their time and consequently progresses.

In the case of those who already play but wish to develop further, or simply wish to learn how to play certain pieces, solos or songs I'm quite prepared to use TAB and go through the requested piece (which may be anything from Roy Orbison to Wishbone Ash to The Foo Fighters to an arrangement for solo guitar of a popular tune).

A common request I get from rock players is how to break out of playing tried and tested (and often tired and best rested) blues/pentatonic-based soloing and into something a bit more adventurous.

Depending on the nature of the lesson I use electric guitar, classical guitar, or steel string acoustic.

Most of my younger pupils enter grade exams (Trinity), achieving no lower than a merit, but more often a distinction. Even if they later become more enthusiastic for rock music the benefit of having grasped a basic understanding of harmony, and of having acquired the skill of reading standard music notation proves hugely advantageous - even more so if they move on to jazz.

Fees may be a few pounds more, or lesson time down to 45 minutes, if a home visit is requested.

I have an up to date enhanced DBS
