Biography

I have been a professional trumpet player and brass teacher for 30 years now. I am Head of Brass at Sherborne School and have held brass teaching posts at Westminster School, Charterhouse, Brighton College, Westminster Abbey Choir School and Aldro.

My teaching style is easy-going and focused on the pupil, everyone is different and has different needs. There is no "right way" with learning a brass instrument so all lessons are tailored to the individual. I like to emphasise the fun aspects of music making - that is the only reason any of us learn to play any instrument after all - but at the same time I like to see pupils achieve the satisfaction of making steady progress.

If appropriate, I prepare pupils for either Associated Board or Trinity Guildhall exams, again according to the needs of the pupil. I have successfully prepared pupils on the ABRSM Jazz syllabus for exams up to Grade 5 (currently the maximum on offer).

I cover all the necessary theory and musicianship techniques according to the level of the pupil as well as any aural training requirements.

My only message is this: listen to music you enjoy, enjoy music you listen to and have as much fun as possible in your music making!

I am an active performer, I play Principal Trumpet with The Orchestra of The Swan and regularly perform with other orchestras including the BBC Concert Orchestra. I have played extensively in the West End in the last 20 years in many shows from Les Miserables to Chicago and many more. I have made extensive commercial recordings for TV & radio jingles and media campaigns, library music, video games and more. I have performed live on BBC TV and radio and recordings I have made have been heard across all the major TV networks.
