Biography

Sarah Field ’s work as a trumpeter and saxophonist is diverse and wholly unique. Performances have taken her from the Mercury award winning band ‘Elbow’ to Hummel’s Trumpet Concerto at the Southbank, London to the UK premiere of Stockhausen’s “Abduction” for saxophone and electronics.

Performing regularly on a range of instruments Sarah has appeared with “Sting” on his tour of Europe and DVD “On a Winters Night”. She also opened singer “Seal”’s Australian & European Tours with a trumpet solo to audiences of 16,000. Past solo appearances include performing with the BBC Concert Orchestra with Christopher Warren-Green, concerto’s with RTE National Symphony Orchestra of Ireland, Kwa Zulu Natal Philharmonic in South Africa with Eno Shao and a performance of Ibert’s Saxophone Concertino with the UK’s critically acclaimedAurora Orchestra.

Sarah won both the Royal Over-Seas League Competition Main Solo Award for Woodwind & Brass and the Making Music Award for Young Concert Artists in 2000. These accolades brought Sarah into the limelight, leading to broadcasts on BBC Radio 2,ClassicfM & BBC Radio 3’s ”In Tune”.

Major festival invitations include the Cheltenham International, Edinburgh Fringe, Newbury, Brighton and Canterbury Festivals, along with solo appearances at Cadogan Hall, Purcell Room, Wigmore Hall (RAM Wigmore Award Finalist), St. John’s Smith Square (with pianist John Lill) and the Queen Elizabeth Hall. With a passion for new music she has commissioned over forty new works supported by the PRS Foundation, Vaughan Williams Trust and Britten Pears.

Sarah studied both trumpet & saxophone at the Royal Northern College of Music, Royal Academy of Music and with John Wallace & John Harle. She graduated (RNCM) with performance diplomas in both woodwind & brass, the only musician ever to do so. She became an Associate of the Royal Academy of Music in 2007 and was recently invited to lecture regularly at the Royal College of Music London.

As a soloist Sarah’s international tours have included New Zealand, South Africa, Ireland and Belgium and has had recital performances in Brunei (Borneo, with pianist Simon Lepper), Africa’s Harare International Festival (with marimba player Mike Hamnett) and the USA. Sarah also was awarded the Gerald Finzi Scholarship to travel across the North of India and to foothills of the Himalayas with her “Indian Odyssey” project. Most recently she has performed and tutored in the Middle East in Oman 2015.
