Biography

My Mother, herself a gifted pianist, began teaching me at the age of 7.

After being awarded the Shelia Mossman Prize, aged 14, for gaining the highest marks for grade 8 in the country, I took a place at St. Mary's Music School, Edinburgh, where I studied with Audrey Innes. Whist there, I won the National Mozart Competition and came 3rd in Young Pianist of the Year competition. I won the Concerto Class in Edinburgh Music Festival and performed Chopin's Concerto no. 1 at Reid Hall, aged 16. Some years later I was offered a scholarship to attend the Royal Northern College of Music, studying with Renna Kellaway where, having completed postgraduate qualifications, I was honored to accept a Junior Fellowship and became a member of staff in 2001.

As a performer, I have given many solo and chamber music recitals at venues such as Bridgewater Hall, St. Martin-in-the-Fields, London, St. John's College, Oxford and also played at Steinway's 100th Birthday Celebration, where Sir Alfred Brendel was Guest of Honour. I have performed with the RNCM Symphony Orchestra and The Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra.

I taught for 11 years at the Royal Northern College of Music, which included the Junior RNCM. I have also taught piano to degree level students at Leeds University and at Canon-Slade Secondary School in Bolton. I currently teach and accompany students at Sheffield Music Academy, and at Stretford High School.

I also now teach at home. I love my work and am very approachable and enthusiastic with students of any level, age or ability. My students, who range in age from 4 to retirement and beyond, always have an enjoyable experience and make great progress.

Whether it's for you or one your children, or a 'one-off' gift for a parent or friend, learning the piano is a skill that is carried throughout life, whether it's to play professionally, or just for your own enjoyment, I would love to hear from you.

Best wishes,

Helen
