Michael Robinson has established a reputation as one of todays most versatile musicians and singers. Originally studying piano and singing at Napier University of Edinburgh, when he was only 16, gaining 2 diplomas with honours, in performance, he then went on to study at the Guildhall School of Music & Drama in London for 4 years, gaining the Bachelor of music honours degree in performance.
In recent years his career has taken him round the globe, as both singer and pianist, performing in some of the world's most prestigous venues including Teatro alla Scala Milan, Lincoln Center New York, Theatre du Chatelet Paris, Orchard Hall Tokyo, Teatro Alfa Real Sao Paolo, the Royal Opera House Covent Garden, and many of London and the UK's major concert halls. For 3 years he was a member of internationally acclaimed a Capella vocal group The Swingle Singers, touring worldwide. In addition to this, he sang with renowned Gilbert & Sullivan specialists the D'Oyly Carte Opera Company, appearing with them for several seasons at the Savoy Theatre in London's West-End, and on UK national tour. He has also performed in many of the country's leading festivals including Edinburgh, Buxton, and the BBC proms, with many of the world's major orchestras, as well as appearing as a soloist in the inaugural International Festival of Music Theatre, in Cardiff. Other stage work has included 2 Britsh premieres of works as diverse as the multi-award winning musical Ragtime, by Ahrens and Flaherty, playing several roles; to Franz Schubert's operatic rarity Die Freunde vom Salamanca in the role of Diego; a new touring production of Bernstein's Candide, covering the title role; and Tamino in Mozart's Die Zauberflöte for Opera Giardino in Ascona, Switzerland. Michael is also a regular soloist with the touring 'hits from the shows' production The Masters of the House, appearing with them throughout the UK and abroad. He is also the musical director of West End...LIVE, an acclaimed musical cabaret regulary appearing throughout Europe.
As a recording artist, Michael has collaborated with many renowned artists, including conductors Sir Simon Rattle, and with Peter Eotvos, in an award winning recording of Luciano Berio's Sinfonia, with the Gothenburg Symphony and Deutsche Gramaphon; and with composers/writers including John Williams, Elton John and Sir Paul McCartney. As musical director and producer in the studio, Michael has been involved in numerous albums as composer/arranger, performer and producer, in music ranging from Classical, through to music theatre, pop, and going back to his roots, in recordings of celtic music.
Michael is also in much demand as a teacher and coach, working with young singers and professionals from some of the country's leading opera and theatre companies and west end theatre, as well as collaborating with several music and drama schools. Most notably he is Head of Singing at the renowned Performers College, one of the UK's leading performing arts institutions, which provides a full-time training in music theatre, dance and drama to some of the UK's most talented young professionals.
Future projects include concerts in Scotland, Luzern and Basel, and in 2013 will sing the role of Anthony in concert performances of Sweeney Todd throughout Switzerland.
