Notes:

I've been teaching music for 18 years and truly love it, it's a passion for me and my students never cease to surprise, amaze and bring joy. I have a gentle and fun approach and always put the student first. I am happy working with children and adults of all ages.

I do a variety of things and have divided the information into sections below. Please do get in touch if you have any questions.

Children under 5:
These lessons last 20 minutes and are a child led mixture of singing, working with pitched and unpitched percussion, piano and violin. I work with the child's imagination and try to tap into their innate creativity. The aim is to inspire and have fun, building a positive relationship to music and learning. I work to build musical confidence and let the learner set the pace. As well as giving one to one lessons I also run a singing and music group for under 5s please visit www.littlesing.org for further details.

Children over 5:
At this stage, I like to focus on a specific instrument. I use various books to help the individual grasp technique, playing by ear and sight reading. I encourage singing and composition at all stages and always tailor my lessons to the needs of the individual. I may also introduce some basic music theory. I never force ideas and maintain a gentle child-centered approach at all times. Once a term I have a little concert in my house and invite students to play something if they want.

Older children and teenagers:
I specialise in Scottish and Irish traditional music and can prepare children for various exams, and if the individual desires I can put them through the Royal Conservatoire Traditional Music grading system. I keep the fun going throughout and and wouldn't want exams to be the main focus. I try to cultivate a love for music which leads to self-motivated practise and learning. I also teach beginner level fiddle, piano, and violin to at all stages. All students are invited to perform at the end of term concert, many of my students will play their own compositions or arrangements, it's always a laid-back affair with tea and cakes and a chance to share.

Adult learners:
I enjoy teaching adults and I'm currently employed by the Scots Music Group as a fiddle teacher. I teach all levels from beginner to advanced.

I teach from my house in the Merchiston area of Edinburgh and recently decided to open up some new spaces.
