Biography

Davina Shum was born in Auckland, New Zealand and studied at the University of Auckland and the Sydney Conservatorium of Music. She has performed with many antipodean ensembles, including holding the Manchester Cello Fellowship with the Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra in 2008 and was a member of the Sydney Sinfonia from 2009-2011. In 2012 Davina performed as principal cellist with the English National Ballet during their acclaimed tour to Sydney.

In 2013 Davina was the recipient of the NZ-UK Link Foundation Elman Poole Scholarship, allowing her to travel to London to join the Southbank Sinfonia. Highlights included working with artists such as Vladimir Ashkenazy, Edward Gardner and Charles Hazlewood; projects with the Academy of St Martin in the Fields, BBC Concert Orchestra and the Orchestra of the Royal Opera House Covent Garden and performing in venues such as the Royal Opera House, the Southbank Centre, Barbican Hall and the Royal Albert Hall.

As a chamber musician, Davina has performed in the Crush Room and Paul Hamlyn Hall in the Royal Opera House, the Purcell Room in the Southbank Centre, the Anghiari Festival in Italy and most recently the Young Virtuosi Festival in France, as well as extensively in rural New South Wales, Australia, as part of the Sydney Conservatoriumís Musical Outreach programme.

Davina currently performs as a freelance orchestral and chamber musician, recording session artist and solo recitalist which have taken her to China, South Africa, Morocco, Spain, Portugal, Norway, and various destinations in the UK. She has worked with a diverse range of ensembles, including the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, St Endellion Festival Orchestra, British Paraorchestra, London Film Orchestra and London Electronic Orchestra. Davina also enjoys inspiring her cello students of all ages and has been an orchestral coach and private tutor in Auckland, Sydney and London.
