Notes:

My name is Zack and I am primarily offering violin lessons for both beginners and more experienced players.
I started playing violin with Hampshire Music Service when I was 10 and I quickly became a Hampshire Music Hub scholar. By the time I was 16 I obtained a scholarship to study music at Queen Maryís College, Basingstoke. It was here I set up a String Ensemble as well as ran performance classes and seminars, all on top of a full academic timetable. It was due to this that I was invited back to become a member of honorary staff as the musician in residence where I teach performance on the A level music course.
I also auditioned successfully for a number of the UK's leading music colleges and decided to accept my offer to study violin at The Royal Birmingham conservatoire with an excellence scholarship. This is where I am now studying towards a BMus (Hons) degree.
I play an active role as a performing musician and I regularly give concerts and recitals both as a soloist, as part of a chamber ensemble and as an orchestral musician. This has given me a good insight into teaching music that was intended to be performed in a variety of contexts and styles.
I have done a large amount of research into both violin technique and playing styles in order to further my own playing and to make sure what I'm teaching is of the most benefit to my students. Also as part of my degree I have dedicated large amounts of time to the study of pedagogy and teaching others.
I enjoy and take pride in teaching a wide variety of students who are both younger and older than myself and come from a wide range of backgrounds.
As someone who originally came from a background with nearly no music at all I understand how learning a stringed instrument is sometimes difficult, but very rewarding. During my time learning the instrument I have been educated by teachers from the Russian, French and American schools of violin technique. This has helped me to understand how there are numerous approaches to nearly all aspects of playing. This flexibility ultimately speeds up the learning process as every player approaches the instrument differently both mentally and physically.
My method is heavily based around setting up a reliable and relaxed technique which will allow any student to play with great freedom and musicality. This will be developed around both carefully selected repertoire, studies and exercises.
I am able to enter students for grade exams when required, but I do encourage also learning for the overall joy of learning to play an instrument. I do this as working through grades can be inspiring for some, however it can be limiting or provide too much pressure in some cases.
I am also happy to teach viola, basic piano, music theory and assist with aural training.
I am offering lessons for students of all ages in Birmingham. I have a recent (Feb 2016) CRB certificate, however pupils under the age of 17 should be accompanied by an adult for the duration of their lesson. I will consider traveling to you for an extra fee for travel by public transport as I donít have a car at the moment.
