Miss Anna Jacobs

Qualifications:
I consider myself to be qualified by experience having had a very specialist Music education from a young age undertaking private lessons at Eton College, and subsequently joining the Purcell School and Guildhall School of Music as a music scholar on both the Piano and Violin. I participated in a number of concerts, as both a soloist and in various chamber groups, and was lucky enough to play at venues including Queen Elizabeth Hall, Royal Festival Hall, Birmingham Symphony Hall and The Bridgewater Hall accompanying the National Childrens' Orchestra of Great Britain and also participating as a fellow orchestral member on the violin.

I am also an experienced teacher having taught privately in Buckinghamshire, at the Chiltern Music Academ, taking pupils through their ABRSM exams, and now at my home in Dorset where I manage a cohort of pupils from beginner level to advanced, from the age of 4-78!
Instruments: I specialise in teaching Classical Piano and Violin, but can adapt to different genres including jazz, pop, film music and everything in between. I also offer Music theory lessons on the side to develop pupils' musicianship skills.
Genre/Style(s): Classically-trained, specialising in teaching Classical Music on the Piano and Violin, but can also turn my hand to other genres!
Ability Levels: Beginners to Advanced

Notes:

What distinguishes me from other teachers?

I think it has to be the fact that I can teach to a high standard (all the grades and beyond), but am also a good piano player in my own right. I believe this gives me a strong advantage over other teachers who may not have the playing and performing experience I've had. And in terms of what this means for my pupils, it means I can work on all the basics with my (often younger) pupils, but also in terms of preparing for an exam, audition, or even teaching older pupils of a higher level, I am able to do this too. I am able to put all the finishing touches and detail into something knowing myself how the final product is meant to sound, as there is a strong chance I have played the piece myself. I am a perfectionist and I think this comes across in my teaching approach too.

I also pay close attention to technique - another USP perhaps... Getting the foundations right from the beginning is a must for me as a teacher. It's like learning to ride a bike and I use a method called Suzuki (which focuses on using one's ears) to achieve this. Once a good ear has been developed, I then focus on reading the music - sight-reading being a key skill for exams and beyond!

I also focus on actually understanding what we are playing by way of some Music theory and try to introduce this in a step-by-step fashion (not to overwhelm the pupils!). Eventually everything comes together like a jigsaw, and there's lots of laughter and fun along the way! It really is all about the journey and as with everything in life, the more the individual puts into it, the more they can get out of it. To this end, I encourage regular practice and commitment in all my pupils.

Finally, I have a huge amount (probably too much) of positivity, energy and dedication in my teaching approach, and a huge passion to spread my love of Piano playing and classical music to my pupils, their families and beyond! I don't see my job as a job, but as a great opportunity to make Music together and begin our Musical journey.. I hope this has been an interesting read, and please do feel free to check out my website: annajacobsmusic.com, and facebook page for a few clips of my playing. Hopefully hear from you and see you soon!
