Beginners to Advanced
I currently offer lessons in South Shields and surrounding areas. I also teach some private lessons in the Tyne Valley.
Beginners and younger students often respond best to a weekly 30 minute lesson.Older or more advanced students tend to make better progress with a fortnightly 1 hour lesson. This allows more time to cover lesson subjects in depth and gives more practice time between each lesson. More ambitious (and hard-working) students can make extremely rapid progress with a weekly 1 hour lesson.
Lessons are currently £15 for 30 minutes or £30 per hour, in line with Musicians Union rates.
Whether you are an absolute beginner wanting to learn your first beats, fills and songs or an experienced drummer looking to develop some fresh ideas I hope I can help you to achieve your musical goals.
I try to tailor lessons to the student’s individual needs as much as possible. There are also some areas that seem to help everybody to improve. I aim to help all students to develop:
A strong vision of what they wish to achieve and a clear path to follow in moving towards their goals.
A love of a wide variety of music both as a listener and a player.
A relaxed level of control with the instrument – hand and foot technique and coordination.
A vocabulary of stylistically diverse groove, fill and solo material.
The ability to learn and play by ear, from memory and from written notation.
Many students wish to do formal grade exams. I have 12 years experience preparing student for Trinity Guildhall and Rock School exams. My students have a 100% success rate in exam entries from Grade 1 up to Grade 8.
Whilst the grade exams can be useful, they are designed as an assessment tool and should not be considered a full curriculum. I think it is essential for all students to do a lot of additional study, learning a variety of songs and pieces, studying from classic drum books and transcribing the work of drummers and musicians they admire. Many students follow this path instead of pursuing grades.
Some students simply wish to learn a few drum beats and fills in order to play their favourite songs. I can help with this too, although I hope you end up learning a few other things in the process!
It can be an excellent idea for a parent and child to share a lesson and learn to drum together. Please get in touch if this appeals to you.
