PGCE Secondary Music
Instruments: Violin
Theory (to grade 5)
Ability Levels: Beginners to Advanced

I have been teaching violin and viola for 28 years, privately, in private schools and also for education authorities. I have experience of teaching all ages (5 - adult) and all standards, beginner to post-Grade 8. I have run Junior and Intermediate string groups, as well as coaching for a number of Youth Orchestras. I believe that playing an instrument should be a shared experience, and encourage pupils to join groups and orchestras - it undoubtedly helps develop their learning, as well as being fun! I am happy to prepare pupils for grade exams, but this is by no means essential - it doesn't suit everyone. With younger pupils in particular I take an holistic approach, using singing and games in lessons. I believe learning to read music is important - I see my job as developing my pupils as fully rounded musicians. I am also an active freelance player - performing is an essential part of being a musician.
