Biography

Somaye grew up in a Muslim family and had to battle her parents to be allowed to start learning to play the piano. As a result she was 13 when she was finally allowed to take up music. Even then it was up to her to raise the money to buy her first piano which she did by working in her Dad's office and saving her pocket money.
Her dedication to music became legendary amongst friends and family when she took A Level Music three times until she achieved the grades she needed to attend the university of her choice and Somaye didn't stop with a BA Hons and ultimately gained an MA in Music from Goldsmiths College, University of London.

It was during her struggles to achieve that Somaye started taking an interest in learning and education to help her overcome her own barriers in learning. As a result she has a range of methods at her fingertips that she uses to help students achieve quickly and effectively and a strong belief that everyone can learn and to a high standard.

Now an accomplished musician, Somaye sings, plays piano and Middle Eastern percussion and teaches all three. Her considerable performance experience includes appearing at Ronnie Scotts and the BBC. She has been interviewed on the BBC for the Jazz/Persian fusion she created and in 2014 she was awarded the Medal (first place) in the Lowes Dickinson Prize for her unique rendition of Duke Ellington's Caravan. Her percussion experience includes playing darbuka (Arabic), tombak (Persian) and tamborim (Brazilian) in a number of bands including the London School of Samba, which she performed with for 4 years.

Somaye's wide-ranging knowledge and experience means she is able to teach various styles from classical to jazz and pop piano and singing and Middle Eastern and samba percussion. Her enthusiasm for music has also extended to the world of music technology and sound and she is proud to have worked at the BBC as a sound engineer for many years as well as, as a music technician in a number of colleges. Therefore she is also  available for teaching music technology to any interested parties.
