Notes:

I have been playing the saxophone since I was 10 years old, and have had a professional career in the music industry for almost 40 years. There is a little more about my career further down.

Teaching is something I truly love doing. In fact I have taught throughout most of my career, from private instrumental tuition to lecturing at a Further Education College in all areas of contemporary music.

As a private tutor I am happy to take students through the grade system to help further their education. I am also happy to teach people how to play without the need to take exams. I embed music theory into the sessions in small doses, so that it becomes a part of the learning process, rather than a separate subject that can become a scary barrier. And for those who want to learn more about theory or need to take an exam, I am able to teach the subject as stand alone sessions. In addition, teaching good technique is central to my lessons because it is at the heart of good playing, and forms a reliable basis from which to express personal creativity.

Every student is an individual, with their own learning style and their own ambition. From young people with dreams of a stellar professional career, to those wishing to have an enjoyable pastime. I am used to working with a wide spectrum of students, and tailoring learning to suit their needs.

One of the fascinating things about being a good session player, in my experience, is that you can be playing in front of 72,000 people at Wembley Stadium one night, then for 15 people crushed into a small bar the next. This is the music business, itís supposed to be fun! I have tried my best to carry these principles into my own teaching.

The artistes I have worked with include Cliff Richard, Howard Jones, Dexys Midnight Runners, Shakiní Stevens and many more. I am currently working with the legendary Geno Washington and the Ram Jam Band, as well as the great folk rock band Feast of Fiddles, and a Pink Floyd tribute called Pulse. In between my music commitments I write and perform my own music, and am in the midst of creating a book on performance.

In the Multimedia section of this site you will find two videos:

Geno and The Ram Jam Band playing live at the Blues Kitchen. There are two saxophone players in the band so if you want to hear my playing go to the following times:
0.32 seconds - Papa's Got a Brand New Bag
3.34 - Michael (the Lover)

Cliff Richard, Hoots Moon, at Wembley Stadium. This video does show me with hair! in a lovely blue suite on stage at the stadium. I am the tall one.
