Australian born mezzo soprano, Lisa Byrnes, studied voice in Australia, Italy and the United Kingdom and completed a Masters of Performance (Opera) from the Sydney Conservatorium of Music, and a Bachelor of Music Education and a Bachelor of Arts (Music), from the Queensland Conservatorium of Music in Australia.
Lisa has worked as a professional singer for many years in Australia and the United Kingdom and has a wide range of professional performing experience.
Performances include, solo mezzo soprano for Verdi Requiem at Birmingham Symphony Hall, recitals at the Schubert Society in London, ‘Highlights of Opera’ concert at the Sydney Opera House, creating songs and show for 'Muse Chanteuse' for The Edinburgh Festival Fringe (5 star review) and in Australia and the United Kingdom, ‘Christmas at the House,’ for Opera Australia at the Sydney Opera House, a tour of ‘My Fair Lady’ for Opera Australia to New Zealand, and many performances as a soloist at major events in the United Kingdom, Australia and Europe.
She has received several scholarships including one from the Italian Government to study language and libretti in Italy.
Lisa is regularly a soloist at major events in the United Kingdom, Europe, and Australia. She was the Australian National Anthem singer at the Tri-nations Rugby League at Loftus Stadium in London and for audiences including the then Australian Prime Minister, John Howard, at Angel Place Recital Hall in Sydney.
Recordings include soloist for Telstra promotional video, Bolivar soundtrack (lead Manuela), and demo recordings for new composers.
Opera work includes productions for Opera Queensland and Opera Australia in Australia, and many innovative companies in the United Kingdom. Roles performed include Orlofsky, Cherubino, and Siebel.
Lisa is also a songwriter and was a finalist in the U.K. Song Writing competition in 2007, 2008 and 2010 with her original opera/classical/fusion crossover songs.
She has a passion for all styles of music and not only performs opera and classical music but also jazz, music theatre and, for demo recordings, pop. Jazz voice was a second study for her at the Queensland Conservatorium of Music and while studying in Queensland she performed at the Gold Coast Jazz festival and years later ran very successful jazz group singing classes at The Music Practice in Sydney.
Lisa’s extensive teaching experience includes teaching singing, music and drama in both private and state sectors. This teaching experience has included teaching amateur and professional singers, national curriculum music teaching key stages 1, 2 and 3, leading singing workshops for opera companies including Pegasus Opera company in London and teaching drama and singing at The Australian Institute of Music and The Music Practice in Australia.
Lisa teaches in London, Herne Hill (SE24) and also at The Dance Attic studios in Fulham (SW6).
