I have been teaching piano and music theory in the Oxford area for twenty-one years, since graduating in Music from St. Hugh's College, University of Oxford in 1998. During that time I have taught the full range of ages and abilities. Currently my youngest pupil is aged four, whilst the most mature in years are in their 70s! I have also taught a wide range of abilities, from those taking their very first musical steps, to people seeking to improve or restart their piano studies, as well as students who are already quite accomplished but wish to take their playing to the next level.

I am flexible regarding whether a student wishes to play piano purely for personal pleasure or whether they also have a desire to take exams and/or perform in public [I do not mean to imply by this that taking exams or performing in public are activities devoid of pleasure!]. In my experience, the majority of children I have taught (but by no means all) have, at some point, opted to take at least some exams, even if they might later choose to play solely for pleasure. The majority of my adult learners (but, again, by no means all) tend to not pursue the exam path! Either way, my main concern is the needs and preferences of the pupil. Above all, learning a musical instrument should be a source of artistic and spiritual enrichment, as well as equipping a person with many invaluable and transferable skill sets.

For those who might be interested in exams, I have a 100% success rate for children entering Associated Board exams for Piano and Music Theory, and have taken individual pupils on the entire musical journey from their very first piano lesson right through to Grade 8 Distinction and beyond. Regarding Music Theory, I have been called upon on many occasions by pupils of other instrumental teachers, in addition to my own pupils, to prepare them for the Grade 5 Theory exam. You may be aware that it is a stipulation of the Associated Board that anyone wishing to take a Grade 6 practical exam on ANY instrument must first have passed the Associated Board Grade 5 Theory Exam. Often I have been called upon at relatively short notice to get students through the exam as quickly as possible (even if they have little knowledge of Music Theory at the outset) in order that they might proceed with their Grade 6 performing exam forthwith.

I am based in the Marston area of Oxford. In addition to teaching at my home I am also equally happy to visit pupils in their own homes should they prefer. Please do feel free to contact me by whatever method is most convenient if you would like any more information. I do offer an introductory lesson. This lesson is entirely without obligation to take lessons with me thereafter. I find it an excellent opportunity to get to know a potential new student and to allow them to gauge whether my approach to teaching is suited to their needs and personality.

Best wishes and happy music-making!
