Kelvin has been teaching my son saxophone for some years. We were introduced via Kelvin’s teaching at Hampton School and this continued after my son left the school before sixth form. Despite my son’s reluctance to aspire to the heights of which he was capable on the saxophone Kelvin managed to get the young man to Grade Eight due to his good nature and perseverance. I have no hesitation in recommending him as an excellent saxophone teacher. David Pedder Hampton Hill

Kelvin taught my daughter for 2-3 years when she had ‘outgrown’ her beginners teacher and reached grade 4 on the flute. In that time he really contributed to her playing and - more importantly - to her musicality more generally, providing an excellent role model along the way. She surprised us all by getting a distinction in her Grade 6 practical exam and I’m sure this was down to Kelvin’s great teaching. Thanks.

"Kelvin has been my teacher for five years taking me up to grade 8 jazz saxophone. I have enjoyed every minute as he has even made learning sometimes boring pieces very fun. All in all he has helped me tremendously to master pieces which seemed impossible at first - he clearly has lots of enthusiasm for jazz always inviting me to his gigs around London. Finally I should mention the fun I have had in his weekly jazz improvisation group which has given me a great introduction to the genre and I can only say kind words about him, any student would be lucky to have him."

'We are so grateful to Kelvin for his care and support, which has enabled our disabled son to experience the joy of music and achieve results such as his recent grade 6 flute exam with merit.’

Kelvin teaches me alto saxophone on a regular basis. In two years, I've gone from complete beginner, having never played an instrument before, to passing grade three jazz saxophone. I'm currently studying for grade five. Kelvin is incredibly patient, knowledgeable and knows how to explain things really well, trying different approaches if something doesn't work first time, as well as making it fun for an adult learner like myself. Cannot recommend him highly enough.

Kelvin has worked with my daughter since primary school when she first started playing the saxophone. Now in Year 11, she has just completed Grade 7, with a distinction. She thoroughly enjoys her lessons and finds them both engaging and innovative. Kelvin has also offered to help my daughter with her music theory. She is looking forward to working towards Grade 8 this coming year.

We've been delighted with the way that Kelvin has taught our (10 year old) son the clarinet. We want it to be a pleasure for him to learn, and so being self-motivated is really important. In this regard Kevin's positive and calm approach works really well. And the distinction grade result speaks to his ability as a coach!

Kelvin is a great jazz musician and a really nice guy. He’s the sort of instrumental teacher you want for your kids but rarely find. His enthusiasm is infectious and now my daughter is really motivated to do well. Kelvin encouraged her to join a local jazz band and over the summer she’s been proud to be playing in gigs nearly every weekend. He’s also helped her to buy a much better mouthpiece and a lovely vintage clarinet which have given her a much better sound. She says Kelvin ‘powered' her through the two exams she’s taken this year and she’s already preparing for the next - not a chore now but a challenge.

I have been studying alto saxophone with Kelvin for a little over two years. Whilst I had some previous musical knowledge, this was not exhaustive. However, during that period Kelvin coached me to a standard by which I was able to play in a small band accompanying three local amateur dramatic society productions (two pantomimes and one play). I am now studying clarinet with Kelvin alongside the alto. Learning with Kelvin has many advantages: he is a musician with years of experience teaching in schools, and individually one-to-one, all age groups including mature students. He is a professional performing musician playing at a very high level, often with visiting international (including American) jazz musicians. He has a sympathetic ear for all music, and is an accomplished arranger and composer. I could continue, but suffice to say one could not find a more professional, experienced, knowledgeable, and kindly teacher than Kelvin. Dave Doubble

'It was an honour to learn to play the saxophone with Kelvin. He is such an incredible player, which clearly shows in his teaching. Working through grades can be a bit tedious, but Kelvin kept me interested throughout. Although I no longer learn with Kelvin (due to moving home), he inspired me to continue, and it is largely because of him that I still play today. Kelvin is so knowledgeable and can help with any problems you might have, whether it is working on your playing technique, giving advice when upgrading saxophones, or simply exploring other jazz musicians. Not only is Kelvin a great teacher, he is a lovely person, and I am happy to say that we have made a strong friendship. My last lesson was over 3 years ago, and, even today, Kelvin had no hesitation in helping me to buy a new Tenor saxophone.' Rory MacPherson

I was taught by Kelvin between the ages of 16 and 19. Before this, I had a real interest in Jazz but no real knowledge or understanding. Kelvin's enthusiasm and expertise in all things jazz sax, inspired me to take my playing to the next stage. He guided me through my grade 8 jazz exam (where I received Honours). I then successfully gained a place on the undergraduate jazz course at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama. I am sure that without Kelvin's excellent teaching, I would not have got this place. I am now a fully professional saxophonist and teacher myself. George Philips BMus (hons.) GSMD
