Classical Singing, Voice
Beginners to Advanced
WHO I AM - I'm a Baritone living in Germany and currently active as a soloist in European Opera Houses. For obvious reasons I am offering mainly singing lessons via Skype here, which is a surprisingly good medium for one-to-one tuitions. I also come often to the UK, sometimes specially to have face-to-face sessions with my students, and keep in touch with their progress.
I have 17 years of experience in teaching the art of the Italian Bel Canto technique, which is the very core of any healthy and efficient form of vocalism, from opera singers and musical theater performers to Cantors and Hazzanim.
TECHNICAL AIMS - a solid understanding of the appoggio technique, methodically reprogramming each group of muscle involved in the process or supporting the sound (body frame, intercostal and abdominal muscles) to work in a specific and coordinated fashion; re-adjustment of the body posture, as objective and consequence of this very general muscular rebalance; stabilization of the larynx (by indirect means) in a comfortably low position; finding of the necessary internal space in the oropharinx, for balance and range stabilization; rediscovery of the interplay jaw - tongue - soft palate; general adjusting of the main resonators.
ARTISTIC AIMS - Here the answer is clear: the word “music” should say it all. What it really means we are going to find out together.
METHODOLOGY - What does it take to make a good teacher? The few great masters I was lucky enough to see in action had two points in common: an amazing understanding of the subject AND a very efficient way of transmitting it to the student. Believe it or not, the former is easier to find than the latter. Both together in one person is Jackpot! This sort of teacher has a personal magnetism, is funny, exciting, sharp, full of passion and has a strange ability of gaining direct access to the mind of his or her audience. Conclusion: good teachers are also good performers; the classroom is their stage.
All this to say that stagecraft, passion, laughs and a lot of intuition are a big part of my teaching process.
SOURCES AND LINEAGE: In terms of contents, the path is three-folded: a) the PRIMARY SOURCE is the technical knowledge of the Italian Bel Canto vocalism, as transmitted to me directly by my own Masters (v.g. Patrick McGuigan); b) the ROOTS of the tradition are the classical teachings of the Great Masters of this lineage (Patrick McGuigan -> Herbert Caesari/Freder and other related fields ic Cox -> Aureliano Pertile/Beniamino Gigli/Antonio Cotogni); and c) the VALIDATION is given by Scientific Studies conducted in vocal physiology, acoustics, and related fields, by scientists like Johan Sundberg or Ingo Titze, which bring the understanding of the empirical teachings to a completely new level.
ACADEMIC QUALIFICATIONS: Masters of Music in Performance by the Royal Northern College of Music (MMus RNCM); PostGraduate Diploma in Vocal Studies by the Royal Northern College of Music (PGDip RNCM); Diploma in Vocal arts by Escola Municipal de Música de São Paulo (Brazil).
First lesson is FREE OF CHARGE and all levels are welcome.
SKYPE AS TEACHING TOOL
To those who may be a bit sceptical about lessons via Skype (as I was some time ago), here are some facts that can make you change your mind.
A lesson via Skype is cheaper – there are no travel costs involved getting to and from lessons. Hence, better for the environment.
It is better to have Skype lessons with an excellent teacher anywhere in the world than it is to have in-person lessons with a mediocre teacher. Skype gives students even more options to choose from when looking for a teacher since they are not restricted to their small local region.
You learn from the comfort of your own home or office and can be anywhere in the world. If you are on holiday or away on business, you can still keep up with your regular lessons.
Skype students don’t have to travel to their teacher’s studio and are not subject to weather conditions, therefore their Schedules are more consistent and the learning process benefits from it. More over, studies show that online students typically stick with their lessons 10% longer than local students.
According to Orman & Whitaker, off-task behaviors took up 36% more time in face-to-face lessons than in distance lessons. (American Journal of Distance Education volume 24, Issue 2, 2010, p. )
MORE PERFORMANCE TIME
The same study indicates that students spend 22% more time performing during distance lessons than in face-to-face lessons.
