Biography

Michael J Tinker is a great lover of stories which makes him right at home within the folk world. Delivered with “guitar-plucking [that] evokes the celestial qualities of a harp” (Sheffield Telegraph) and even solo voice, his songs will make you think, laugh and maybe even shed a tear.

Michael J Tinker started playing music at a very early age. Singing for as long as he remembers Michael entered the instrument world learning trumpet aged 8, followed by piano, guitar and percussion. “I’ve always wanted to play music” comments Michael. “Even when I’m listening to music I’m thinking about how I could perform it”.

Over the years Michael’s eclectic taste has not waned as he now performs with up to 6 different instruments including guitar, Anglo concertina and an assortment of cigar-box guitars.

This eclecticity not only applies to instruments but also genres. From stage performances and singing choral arrangements as a youth, to performing Jazz in full tuxedo, he’s done it all. Michael’s previous band were often described as genre-less as they constantly crossed the boundaries throughout their performances.

More recently Michael has settled in the traditional folk world. He has always had a passion for songs that tell good stories, citing great song-story-tellers such as Harry Manx and Mark Knopfler as huge influences. Living in the folk-hub that is South Yorkshire, Michael has had the opportunity to rub shoulders with those at the forefront of the modern folk world, such as Jon Boden, Damien O’Kane and Tom Oakes.

Michael has supported the likes of Bellowhead, Lucy Ward, Ewan McLennan and the Albion Band, has performed with BBC Folk Award nominee Katriona Gilmore and Damien O’Kane and recently worked with folk-legend Bill Leader on his 2012 album. This has undoubtedly shaped his present direction and choice of songs, veering increasingly towards the wealth of traditional songs from the British Isles and beyond. In 2013 Michael is set to perform around the country including dates in London, Cambridge, Birmingham, Norwich, Bradford, Sheffield and Stroud. He also released a single with Damien O’Kane entitled ‘Shenandoah’.

Michael is a committed Christian and his faith plays a central role in his music making, even if the songs are not always explicitly about God. “We’re created to be creators” says Michael. “Every time we create – whether it’s a piece of music, a work of art, a landscaped garden or even a pie – we reflect the one who made us and what we were made for – that’s why it feels so good!”
