Biography

Teaching experience:
I have taught Music in a secondary school for 6 years and am therefore very confident working with students of all abilities, from many different backgrounds. I can be flexible with my teaching approaches to ensure that barriers to learning are reduced. I completed my teacher training in an area of Birmingham where 60% of pupils spoke English as their second language, so I have experience of using clear instructions to allow everyone to access the tasks set.

I work hard and always want to do my job to a high standard. I have run numerous extra-curricular classes beyond my job description as a classroom teacher, including a school Orchestra, Choir and Music Theory club. Recently, I became co-founder and Deputy Musical Director of the Eccleshall Community Band (formed in September 2019). I regularly arrange and compose music to specifically suit the musicians I am writing for.

My expertise as a qualified teacher also means that I am used to monitoring and recording pupils’ progress and devising strategies and interventions to help them. I am competent at sensitively discussing children’s strengths and areas for improvement, offering a jointly supportive role with parents or carers.

Playing history:
I grew up near Cambridge and began playing the cornet aged 7. I progressed through my local training and youth bands before switching to the euphonium and joining the Senior Band. Aged 14, I was accepted into the prestigious Chetham’s School of Music where I received an excellent musical education. I regularly performed with the Chorus in prestigious locations across the UK including Manchester and Lichfield Cathedrals, Windsor Castle and the Bridgewater Hall. I remained in Manchester for 8 years, attending the Royal Northern College of Music and studying with David Thornton (euphonium) and Roger Cutts (trombone). On leaving the RNCM I was awarded the prestigious ‘Harry Mortimer Brass Student of the Year’ award, which was presented to me on stage at the British Open Brass Band Championships.

I was a member of the National Youth Brass Band of Great Britain for four years, under the baton of Bramwell Tovey. During my time in Manchester, I was solo euphonium with the Championship Section Marsden Silver Prize Band in Yorkshire, with Glyn Williams as Musical Director. Highlights here included winning the Senior Cup contest and coming third in the All England Masters and the Scottish Open Championships. At the Whit Friday marches I was awarded the ‘Best Euphonium’ title in several locations. I also had opportunities to attend rehearsals and play in concerts with several of the country’s top bands including the Black Dyke Band and Fodens.

In 2012 I became a Licentiate of the Royal Schools of Music, following a recital of contemporary music which I also performed at the International Tuba and Euphonium Conference in Linz.

After Music College, I spent 5 years with the former Co-operative Band in Crewe (now known as TCTC Band) and celebrated coming third in the North-West regional championships.
