(Kenny)Yong Jia started to learn the clarinet at the age of 14, and retrieved his Trinity Guildhall Grade 8 certificate by the age of 18. He then went on to study Foundation in Music in UCSI University Malaysia majoring clarinet under Lawrence Fong. After finishing his foundation studies, he continued his degree studies in Middlesex University London and majoring clarinet under Janet Hilton. Before continuing his Master's degree in Royal Welsh College of Music, Yong Jia had been teaching back in Malaysia as clarinet tutor in several music institutions and universities, at the same time he studied with the Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra principle Gonzalo Esteban.

Yong Jia also won the 2015 Malaysian ABRSM Winds Music Prize (previously named Borneo Reeds ABRSM Professional Development Prize).

Currently Yong Jia is studying with John Cooper in Royal Welsh College of Music.
