“I teach piano to enable my students to be creative, having fun exploring the instrument is very important to me”

I’m James Clark, a professional pianist, performer and tutor.

- Visiting tutor at the Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama
- Piano tutor and visiting artist at International Music School Cardiff
- Workshop Leader with Education Group, London
- 1st class degree in music performance, Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama.

I perform with several ensembles such as the Mañana Collective which performs Cuban and Brazilian music in venues like St. James’ Piccadilly, London & La Zorra y el Cuervo, Havana. My ensemble ‘The Lonely Hearts Rugby Clwb’ has performed its joyous world music at London & Brecon Jazz Festivals.

I work happily with students of all ages and levels, whether you are playing the piano for the first time, coming back to it after some time away or looking to take your musicianship to a higher level. I will look forward to developing a pathway for you to be able to enjoy and get what you want out of playing the piano.

Aspects of piano I am working on with current students include:
- Learning music by listening
- Learning music by reading notation
- Playing grooves and rhythms
- Improvisation
- Composing music at the piano

I teach piano to enable my students to be creative, having fun exploring the instrument is very important to me. Whilst I encourage my students to work hard developing their skills, we ‘play’ music for a reason. I write original music for my students, creating a completely bespoke pathway with the aim of guiding you into whichever style of music they enjoy playing.

For the advanced student, we will work towards a more thorough knowledge of the piano. I teach theory and improvisation to an advanced level, playing more challenging material. I often teach students who have learnt classical piano and would like to develop skills playing by ear.

I come to your home for the lessons and am based in Clapton. I am happy to travel covering North East London from Stoke Newington to Shoreditch & Hackney.

Prices are £30 for an hour at your home
Half hour lessons, usually for younger children, are £20
