Notes:

Firstly, I teach Monday to Thursday mid afternoon to evenings only and lessons are at my home. Please telephone between 9am and 9pm and be aware that I may be teaching and might need to call you back.

My Disclosure and Barring Certificate (formerly CRB) is current, with the most recent check being made for school teaching in January 2018.

I teach beginners through to advanced level. Whilst I prefer pupils to be 8+ years I will consider pupils from 6 years of age following on from a consultation lesson.

I have 30+ years of teaching experience, 25+ years of those being in secondary school classroom teaching and so I can help with GCSE and A level performance and listening.

I use both Trinity Guildhall and occasionally ABRSM for examinations but pupils can just learn for fun without taking exams.

I make use of apps and recording facilities where necessary/possible. Occasionally I also use photo/video of hand positions/posture in order to facilitate learning. However, photos/videos are erased in front of the pupil as soon as they have been used to demonstrate the point.

Above all, the lessons should be fun, but there is a strong expectation of work from the pupil, both in the lesson and at home.

I accompany on the piano and am happy to use the occasional lesson to rehearse with a pupil on their 'other' instruments in preparation for exams, concerts, etc.. I can be booked to accompany exams, concerts, etc..

A piano is required at home! In the very initial stages of learning, if a pupil is not certain about continuation of lessons then a keyboard is an acceptable alternative. However, lessons will be on a piano and exams, should they be taken, will be on a piano (quite often a grand). A keyboard is, therefore, only an acceptable alternative for early beginners, so please make sure that you have space to house a piano, at least electric, preferably acoustic!

Having built up my private instrumental teaching business I now have a waiting list for new pupils. Currently this is short and so if you are interested in lessons in the future it is worth considering having your child placed on the list, even if they are young - by the time that they are old enough for lessons their name might be at the top of the list and in line for first refusal of lessons.

Lesson cancellation policy - one full week of notice is required otherwise full fee is due, even in the case of illness. I try to rearrange lessons wherever possible - pupils rarely have to pay unless disorganised or ill for a week! Lesson termination can be at any point without incurring charges, though any outstanding charges will still be due. Please be mindful that for any musician working from home their income is still their living and that my policy above is more lenient than local swimming and dancing lessons!

Lesson payment - either by cash or bank transfer. BACS payments are in advance and are half-termly only. Cash payments can be weekly, fortnightly etc but not in arrears.
