I love teaching music.
I draw on my early classical training, experience in performing in rock, folk and jazz bands and have always played by ear. I also work as a piano accompanist in both classical and contemporary styles.
I write, arrange and record music which also deepens my musical understanding.
30 years a musician, 20 years a music teacher, 10 years a music examiner.
I have been working as a singing and piano teacher in Tunbridge Wells area during the last twenty years.
I have taught students from 5 years old to 75 and I adapt the lessons to be age appropriate.
Some students wish to learn for the pure enjoyment of playing piano and singing. I work with students to prepare for auditions and performances. Others want to take exams and I have taught and guided students who want to take exams for Rockschool, ABRSM (Classical), ABRSM (Jazz), ABRSM (Theory), ABRSM (Practical Musicianship), London College of Music and Trinity. I never put in a student unless I am sure they will pass and the majority of students gain distinctions or high merits.
I travelled the world for 10 years, working as a senior music examiner for Rockschool. This experience has given me clear understanding of what is needed to pass music exams well, both from the aspect of performing and gently developing self confidence to cope comfortably and well.
I want every student to leave my teaching room feeling that they have enjoyed their lesson.
I always ask them what kind of music they want to play or sing and include as many of their choices as are practical, in amongst the music I choose for them to learn.
I aim for all my students to become well rounded musicians who read music well, can play by ear, have theoretical understanding, can improvise and most importantly enjoy every moment of their learning.
Learning the piano can be complex but I have thought about this greatly and have written a lot of music that builds the students strength in their hands and fingers, co-ordination of hands, knowledge of the layout of the piano in a gentle way. Suddenly they are reading and playing music with both hands, without it feeling like a chore.
During singing lessons, the student gradually gets to know their voice, where are the strengths and weaknesses. We explore how to recognise when vocal tone is not controlled and are given strategies to make improvements; how to put across the story of a song and the practicalities of using a microphone and amplification. I think it is as important for singers to develop theoretical knowledge and develop their musical vocabulary as it is for any instrumentalist, but again I want this to be fun and enjoyable.
